OUR SURVEY SAID... When asked what kind of Christmas tree you opt for, 54% of you said you let your machete do the choosing, often in the Ikea parking lot. Bravo! Maybe we`ll try a potted tree next year.

Thanks for sharing, Errol, these are great. Did the majority of students get a lot out of it in the end? Is there anything you'd do differently a second time around? Jimmy

IMBY: An SVN3E Energy Activity, Part One.

I just read a cracking tweet on this SVN3E subject area. It could cover some of the work in Unit 4: Using Energy in Our Lives, but combined with some other resources and investigation (some of which could be done by students themselves) it could also tie in with many other SVN3E topics.

IMBY is an acronym for ‘In My Back Yard’, and in case you were unaware, that’s a pun on NIMBY or ‘Not In My Back Yard’,… Continue

Real VS Fake: which are you?

We always buy a real Christmas tree. Why? It smells better, it looks better, it feels better. We love everything about it, from the Clark Griswald moment (see video) to the cleaning up of the pine needles into the following September. But until now, we hadn't given much thought to the environmental side of the ritual. Are real trees bad for the environment? It does involve cutting down trees, after all. Isn’t that deforestation? No! I refuse to give up my sacred Balsa… Continue

The World Without Us

You may already be familiar with the Alan Weisman book 'The World Without Us'. I tweeted a link on the subject a few weeks back.

There are quite a few interesting resources out there, so I thought I'd collect some of them together here.

In case you're unfamiliar, Weisman's book asks the question '… Continue

What's your Ecological Footprint?

Ok, I know the figures are based on Calgary (you can also choose Switzerland or the US) but this is a fun quiz to illustrate how our day to day lives impact the world around us, and the extent of that ecological footprint.

There's a child and an adult, a detailed and a basic version, with explanations along the way. You even get to choose a character to walk you through, down to clothes and hair colour!

If you could rig it up in the… Continue

Thanks for the response.

Have you thought about providing this type of social networking in other subject areas (Chemistry, Physics etc)?

Also I noted when I signed up that your site somehow obtained information from a different networking group a friend of mine setup. He asked me to jion so I entered flippant information. Your site entered it in my profile (eg. * Lac Rouge & * Uzbekistan) Comments?

Thanks...It's nice that I discovered this site. I'm the only one teaching 3E right now at my school and I'm finding it hard to make everything from scratch. There's no sense in re-creating the wheel every day for class if you don't have to. I found this picture of the frog on a search one day. Someone edited it to have the poison skull on its skin...a neat pic for toxicity...
